Calvinia Magic Garden offers a relaxed, free-spirited retreat in Calvinia, ideally situated roughly halfway between Cape Town and Upington. This unique establishment is an extension of the owners’ artistic expression, blending music, sculpture, and painting into a tranquil environment designed to soothe the soul.
Accommodation is offered in five individually styled rooms. Two of the rooms can accommodate up to three guests each, while the remaining three rooms are suited for two guests. Each room includes an en-suite bathroom. The Zen Room is equipped with a bar fridge, microwave, and tea- and coffee-making facilities, while the Orgone Room features a fully equipped kitchen for self-catering convenience.
The surrounding landscape, though often marked by drought and intense sunshine, is renowned for its dramatic natural beauty. This is especially evident in Namaqualand, one of the world’s six floral kingdoms, where spring transforms the plains into a vibrant carpet of wildflowers.
Nearby, the Akkerdam Nature Reserve, located on the slopes of the Hantam Mountain, offers a variety of hiking trails. The gentle Kareeboom Route, approximately 2 km long, is ideal for a relaxed walk, while the more challenging Sterboom Route takes hikers along the eastern slopes and up to the plateau, requiring 6 to 7 hours to complete.
For bird enthusiasts, the Kareedam area serves as a haven for migratory birds, with up to 65 different species recorded, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatching and nature appreciation.
