A very nice getaway from everything with the most wonderful silence. Paardefontein's River House is a very nice getaway, to get away from internet, TV, and everything that makes life a rush. It's very beautiful (dry Karoo beautiful) there and the house and yard with braai area are very neat and clean. I was received very friendly and hospitable by Katriena. Wood was neatly laid out for me to braai, and everything I needed was there so that I could enjoy a nice braai on a quiet (but terribly hot) Karoo evening. With Katriena's permission, I was able to go for a nice walk on the two-track paths on the farm and take in the silence of the surroundings. The air conditioner in the room was a definite winner on a 38°C day! And just sitting there on that stoep in the morning with your coffee and rusks was soul-enriching! It is a bit of a drive out onto a dirt road (which is certainly not suitable for regular sedan cars or vehicles with low ground clearance or vehicles with low-profile tires), but it is also very clearly indicated as such on the information sheet for Paardefontein. Just be prepared that there are quite a few farm gates that you have to drive through, all of which have to be opened and closed by hand - but that is part of a farm and part of the getaway and contributes to the silence and seclusion that you experience there. The cottage is equipped with good bedding and everything you need in the kitchen. Nice sofas provide a nice atmosphere in the living area, should you prefer to spend an extremely hot day in the comfortable cool air of the air conditioner. The campfire/braai area is very comfortable and provides a nice veld braai feeling. I can easily recommend Paardefontein's River House to someone who is looking for the silence of the Karoo and who is not looking for internet.

Delicious farm stay rests for your soul. Paardefontein is really highly recommended to get away from any cell phone reception and just enjoy nature. It is a very neat farm and the river house lacks nothing. Would also recommend supporting with the griddle cakes she makes. It's delicious and she doesn't hold anything back for Tannie Poppie in Laingsburg. Maybe just as good or even better.
