In Seaside Longships, just 400m from the beach, Shpoggle Island Surf House is a creative, characterful self-catering home for up to 8 - the kind of Plettenberg Bay base where the holiday starts the moment you walk in. Surf, climb, box, swim and chill - all under one roof on South Africa's Garden Route.
This is no ordinary surf house. An indoor pool sits behind sliding glass doors (close them off when little ones are about), there's a proper climbing board, a home gym with a boxing bag, and a bar built for sundowners at the braai. The spaces flow from inside to out: a covered outdoor dining area for eight, two hammock nets built into the deck for stargazing, a fire pit ringed with couches, a yoga deck, an outdoor shower and koi ponds for slow mornings with coffee in hand.
The four bedrooms are named for legendary surf breaks that we've loved surfing and sleep eight in total. The primary room (Hossegor) has a queen bed, en-suite bathroom, with shower, and its own door to the pool house. A self-contained studio (Ericeira) offers a private entrance, kitchenette, en-suite shower and patio - ideal for a couple, grandparent or student looking for a little independence. Two further queen rooms (Aourir and J-Bay) share a family bathroom with both bath and shower. In all: two en-suites and one family bathroom, 4 bedrooms.
Self-caterers are well looked after. The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, oven, fridge-freezer and microwave, plus the good stuff - a De'Longhi coffee grinder, French press, grinder, Nutribullet and airfryer, Nespresso machine - and a breakfast bar to perch at. There's a braai for long lunches, a laundry with washing machine, tumble dryer and line, secure on-site parking, and free Wi-Fi throughout, so remote work and longer stays are easy.
The location is the Garden Route at its best. Walk to the beach, then choose your day: surf at Lookout, Wreck or Keurbooms, hike the wild Robberg Nature Reserve peninsula, kayak the Keurbooms lagoon, mountain bike through the forest and trails, or watch for whales and dolphins in season (roughly June to November). Central Plett's restaurants, markets and sundowner spots are minutes away, with Birds of Eden, Monkeyland, the wine farms at The Crags, Knysna and Tsitsikamma all within an easy drive.
Warm, playful and out of the ordinary, Shpoggle Island suits family stays, group getaways, creative retreats and surf trips alike. Come for the beach, stay for everything else.
