Effortless stay, paradise, beach holiday.
I’m usually quite critical when it comes to accommodation and holidays, and it’s rare that I leave a place and think: I’d come back tomorrow. But Simplex 9 @ The Dunes was honestly one of the best holidays we’ve ever had – and that includes overseas trips. The unit is about 10 minutes outside Plettenberg Bay and less than 5 minutes from Keurboomsstrand, in a secure residential estate that used to be a hotel. It doesn’t feel like an ordinary holiday spot – it feels like a resort where you can really switch off. You can walk to the beach (there is a hill, so it’s not just a straight walk), but if you’re lucky, you’ll get a lift with other holidaymakers on their golf carts. The beach itself is something special – a beautiful Blue Flag beach, mostly for residents only with lifeguards. Sunset at the beach is a must. By late afternoon people start to walk down with picnic baskets, children and chairs – it becomes a whole ritual and something you really don't want to miss. We were personally welcomed by Jeanne upon arrival, and made to feel welcome, she responded immediately to any message and was very friendly. The Simplex is located above the ground floor and perfectly placed for us. The new deck overlooks a large lawn and trees, and it quickly became our favorite spot. Every morning we drank coffee while Knysna loeries chased each other around in the trees right in front of us – something you don't experience every day. Inside, the unit is practical, comfortable and well-appointed for its size. The living area has a connected TV and reliable WiFi. The kitchen is not large, but works really well – fast stove and oven, and more than enough basic equipment to comfortably cook food. There is even a braai bowl! The second bedroom with two single beds was modern, very comfortable and has good cupboard space. The master bedroom was a huge plus for me – the double doors opening onto the deck make a huge difference, and we often slept with it open. The bed was wonderfully comfortable. We are a family of four with boys aged four and six, and the bathroom worked perfectly for us. The boys were exactly at that age where a shower is something new and fun, and everything was simple and practical. What really makes this place stand out, though, is the estate itself. Right in front of the unit is a jungle gym, and the swimming pool is just a short walk away – and fully fenced, which was a huge bonus for us as parents. The pool is perfect for both kids and adults, with a shallow section for little ones and a deeper section for adults. The water was warm (even for us Cape Towners!), and we literally went swimming more than once every day, sometimes for hours. There is also a small shop within the complex, which was incredibly handy – from basic necessities to breakfast, and even the option to have laundry done. It's those little amenities that made a holiday so much easier. Even over Christmas and New Year's it was peaceful. People were friendly, polite and respectful. No noise or chaos. Our children could ride their bikes around, make friends and play, and we could sit and watch from the deck. For parents with young children, this is worth its weight in gold. We stayed 11 nights and the days flowed naturally: mornings for beach or excursions, afternoons by the pool, and evenings to wind down. There is an incredible amount to do nearby: Singing Kettle Beach (where I could float around in the sea for hours like a child!) and walking to Arch Rock was an absolute highlight, Knysna excursion, Nature's Valley, Tsitsikamma forest, hikes and game viewing - all within easy reach. We couldn't nearly get to everything in 12 days, we have to come back! This was one of those holidays where you really switch off, without ever being bored. Good, quality time. Fun. Rest. Nature. Everything you could hope for on a vacation. We are already looking at availability for next year.
