The Old Hatchery Lodge offers affordable and comfortable bed and breakfast as well as self-catering accommodation, situated approximately 10 km from Underberg on the Drakensberg Road in the Southern Drakensberg. The property is conveniently located about 1.5 hours from Howick and 1 hour from Kokstad, making it an ideal stopover between Johannesburg and the South Coast or Wild Coast.
Accommodation is available across a variety of units to suit different group sizes and preferences. Oak Tree Guest House features 8 en-suite rooms, each offering the option of king-size or twin beds. All rooms include en-suite bathrooms fitted with both a bath and a shower, as well as tea and coffee-making facilities and a TV with DStv. Guests have access to free parking, free WiFi, and an on-site à la carte restaurant, with accommodation options ranging from bed and breakfast to self-catering and full board.
Otter’s Den is a 3-bedroom self-catering cottage suitable for families or small groups of up to 6 guests. The unit includes one king-size bedroom and two additional rooms that can be configured as twin or king-size beds, each with its own en-suite bathroom. The cottage features an open-plan kitchen and lounge area that opens onto a patio with mountain views.
Two additional self-catering cottages are available, each suitable for couples. These units include a bathroom, kitchenette, and braai facilities, and are accessed via wooden decking that crosses a small waterfall, enhancing the scenic setting. Dragonfly is a 3-bedroom self-catering cottage that accommodates up to 6 guests, with the main bedroom featuring an en-suite bathroom, while the remaining two bedrooms share a separate bathroom with a shower.
Castle View Glamping Tent offers a luxury self-catering experience with an en-suite bathroom, a private deck, and a braai area overlooking the Garden Castle. Camping facilities are also available, consisting of 4 caravan and tent stands with braai facilities and electricity, supported by a well-maintained ablution block with a dishwashing area.
On-site dining is available at The Waterfall Restaurant, which overlooks a year-round waterfall and the Drakensberg Mountains, offering an à la carte menu and bar service. The surrounding area provides a wide range of outdoor activities, including horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, golf, trout fishing, guided Sani Pass 4x4 excursions, equestrian events, and access to San rock art.
