Bergrivier Eco Retreat is a tranquil nature getaway on a 500-hectare farm in the Gamtoos Valley near Thornhill. The retreat is unique as it encompasses three biomes—fynbos, indigenous forest, and thicket—together forming an incredibly diverse landscape. Guests can find peace, breathe deeply, and experience nature in its purest form.
Accommodation includes a stone rondavel with a wood-fired hot tub, a stone cottage, a wooden house, a standard house, and three stylish ox-wagons, all fully self-catering with comfortable beds, private bathrooms, kitchens, and braai (barbecue) facilities. Each unit is privately situated with stunning views.
The indigenous forest is a cool, dense paradise of yellowwood trees; the fynbos features proteas, ericas, and unique plant species; and the thicket provides shelter for wildlife and birds. This natural mix makes Bergrivier ideal for hiking, birdwatching, photography, mountain biking, river swimming, stargazing, and braai evenings under an open sky.
The retreat is 35 km from Jeffreys Bay and 50 km from Port Elizabeth, close to beaches and shops, yet far enough to enjoy complete tranquility. Future plans include new chalets, wood-fired hot tubs, a large pool with a deck, MTB trails, a farm shop, and the Chacma Trail—a 3-day hiking route with two overnight huts.
Bergrivier’s heart lies in conservation and rewilding: invasive plants are removed, indigenous forests are restored, and the land becomes more beautiful each year. It is a place for families, couples, and nature lovers who value space, simplicity, and genuine farm hospitality.
