Description

Groenkloof Nature Reserve was the first game sanctuary in Africa, and lies next to the Fountains Valley at the southern entrance to Pretoria. The 600 hectare reserve is managed by the Department of Nature Conservation, and is flanked by Christina de Wit Avenue and Nelson Mandela Drive, both of which separate it from the Voortrekker Monument and Klapperkop Nature Reserves.

Here one can go hiking, 4x4ing, game viewing, or cycling, and within an hour be among the game. The game is tame and therefore one can come relatively close. The wildlife on the reserve includes zebra, jackal, duiker, kudu, impala, blue wildebeest, blesbok, red hartebeest, ostrich, giraffe, and sable. There are plenty of picnic areas in the reserve.
