Harold Johnson Nature Reserve

Description

The Harold Johnson Nature Reserve is an enchanting reserve situated on the south bank of the Thukela River on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The 100 hectares are filled with fascinating flora and fauna, including birds, small mammals, and butterflies.

The reserve houses two national monuments, namely Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree which commemorate the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. There are also two camping grounds available with limited facilities, as well as a lovely picnic site on the hilltop.

The reserve has 7km of nature trails, such as the Muthi Trail which gives interesting insight into the various traditional plants used by the Zulu people. Wildlife species you can spot in the reserve include zebra, bushbuck, impala, vervet monkey, mongoose, and porcupine, as well as blue, red, and grey duiker. There are over 200 recorded species and 114 species of butterflies.
