Signal Hill

Description

Signal Hill, also known as Lion's Rump, is a flat-topped hill and lookout point located in Cape Town, next to Lion's Head and Table Mountain. It derives its name from a signal station that was used to communicate visually with ships from atop hill. Today, the hill is most well known for the noon gun whose firing echoes though the city at noon each day as a reminder of those who died in World War I and II.

The top of the hill is a favourite spot for picnics, and while the views are not quite as phenomenal as those from atop Lion's Head, Signal Hill is well worth the compromise as one can drive right to the top. The drive to the top of Signal Hill passes 4 of the 6 kramats (sacred tombs of Muslim holy men) that are believed to protect Cape Town.
