Description

Cape Route 62 is a popular tourist route meandering from Cape Town in the Western Cape, to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, offering a scenic alternative to the N2 highway. Also known as the “Mountain Route” Route 62 passes through spectacular landscapes, streams, vineyards, and flora. Visitors travel from far and wide to experience the wine route and multitude of attractions that exist here. Scroll down and browse our range of accommodations along the famous Route 62.

Route 62 runs through a variety of accessible farming towns definitely worth a visit. These are namely, Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Amalienstein, Zoar, and the fruit and wine producing towns of Barrydale, Montagu, Ashton, Bonnievale, Robertson, McGregor, Worcester, Rawsonville, Ceres, Wolseley, Tulbagh, Wellington, and Paarl, as well as the Langkloof towns of Misgund, Louterwater, Krakeel, Joubertina, and Kareedouw.

The route is South Africa’s response to America’s legendary Route 66, a historic interstate highway that covered about 4,000km over 8 states. Although Route 66 was replaced in 1985, its legacy lives on as a path of memorable road trips. Fortunately in South Africa, Route 62 is still thriving and growing more and more popular each year. The route’s prime attraction is its wine route – the longest in the world. It covers 70 wines farms in Paarl, Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson, and the Klein Karoo. What’s more, 11 of these estates are specialist brandy cellars and make up the Route 62 Brandy Route, which is an attraction on its own.

Visitors are drawn to Route 62 by the tranquillity it offers those who travel along its winding path. The locals are friendly and helpful, and there is a variety of quaint farm stalls, restaurants, and cafes to stop off at to complete your journey. There is a variety of activities on offer along Route 62 to suit every need which ensures your road trip will never get boring. You can stop for port tasting in Calitzdorp, the port-making capital of South Africa, or visit Grundheim Wines in the Klein Karoo to try their potent witblitz (white brandy) and other cream-based liqueurs. Those looking for leisure will enjoy taking a swim in the Tweedetol rock pools in the Bainskloof Pass, or relaxing in the hot springs around Montagu. For a bit of fun, stop off at Oudtshoorn and ride an ostrich, or pop into Ronnie’s Sex Shop and see how a small prank turned the pub into a popular tourist stop.

Other activities you can enjoy along Route 62 include game drives, 4x4 trails, golfing, visiting the Crocodile Farm near Paarl, river cruises with Afrikaans cuisine, and wine tasting. Zip line adventures, caving, hot air ballooning, cultural tours, horse riding, visiting museums, farms, and nature reserves are also popular activities along Route 62.
