Set on a working farm along the gentle bend of the river at Groendraai, Groendraai River Cottages is a place where land, water & sky quietly meet.
The farm is alive with rhythm — crops growing in season, bushveld birds calling at dawn & the slow, steady flow of the river shaping the land. Life here is guided by patience, observation & respect for nature - values that have shaped both the farm & the cottages that sit within it.
Each cottage at Groendraai is named after an element found here - drawn from the river, the night sky, the surrounding bush & the soil itself. Together, the names tell a story of balance: nourishment & stillness, work & rest, simplicity & refinement.
A stay at Groendraai is not about escape from the land, but about resting within it - where luxury is thoughtful, quiet & deeply connected to place.
Groendraai River Cottages is tucked away just 15 km outside Vaalwater in the scenic Waterberg region, offering a tranquil bushveld escape. It’s the perfect stopover for guests travelling from Johannesburg towards Lephalale or Botswana, or simply for those wanting to relax & reconnect with nature.
Accommodation is offered in 4 comfortable cottages, 3 of them sleeping up to 4 guests & our Solanum cottage sleeping up to 6 guests. Every unit is furnished with cosy beds & bathrooms fitted with either a bath & shower or a shower only.
Each cottage features a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave & air fryer. Some units are further fitted with extras such as a filter coffee machine and/or dishwasher. The cottages also include a comfortable living area with air-conditioning & a private patio with braai facilities, where guests can soak up the peaceful bushveld setting.
A highlight of each unit is the outdoor wood-fired hot tub, perfect for cooling off during the day or enjoying a warm soak under the stars in the evenings. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and the Silver Carp & Solanum Cottages are equipped with a smart TV in the lounge.
Guests can enjoy catch-&-release fishing in the Mokolo & Sterkstroom Rivers or nearby dams. You’re welcome to bring along your own battery-powered bass boat, or simply paddle out on the river in one of the 3 kayaks provided. As the cottages are located on a working farm, visitors can also explore the farm’s cycling & hiking trails, marvel at the seasonal Amaryllis in bloom, or enjoy the playful antics of the cattle.
Whether you’re passing through or looking for a true bushveld breakaway, Groendraai River Cottages offers the perfect balance of relaxation & adventure.
