Description
Bontebok National Park is situated just 6 km from the picturesque and historic town of Swellendam, approximately 240 km from Cape Town and 540 km from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Easily accessible from the N2, the park's compact size allows visitors to explore the entire reserve within a few hours, making it an ideal stopover between Cape Town and the Garden Route. It is perfect for a picnic, swim, short hike, or family outing.
Sheltered by the majestic Langeberg Mountains and bordered by the tranquil Breede River, Bontebok National Park forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and played a vital role in saving the endangered bontebok from extinction.
Accommodation is available at Lang Elsies’ Kraal Rest Camp, which offers fully equipped self-catering chalets as well as caravan and camping sites with and without electricity. All campsites have access to communal ablution facilities. The rest camp is named after the Hessequa Khoi Khoi chieftainess, Lang Elsie, who lived in the area with her clan during the 18th century. Set on the banks of the Breede River, the camp boasts magnificent views of the river, surrounding fynbos, and the Langeberg mountain range.
Bontebok National Park is also a popular destination for day visitors. Recently upgraded facilities include the Die Stroom recreational braai area and function venue. Visitors can enjoy picnics along the Breede River, make use of designated braai facilities, or relax at Die Stroom while taking in the natural beauty of the park.
Whether visiting for a day trip or an overnight stay, Bontebok National Park offers a peaceful escape into nature, abundant birdlife, scenic landscapes, and excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation.
