Description

Melrose House is a dignified mansion in Pretoria, Gauteng. Built in 1886, it was named after the famous Melrose Abbey in Scotland. It was the residence of Lord Kitchener, British commander-in-chief during the South African war, and it was here that the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed on 31 May 1902, ending the war.

Today the mansion is a historical house museum and an excellent example of the transition from Victorian to Edwardian architectural styles and interiors. Visitors can look forward to seeing beautiful stained glass windows, paintings by English artists, rich carpets, ornate ceilings and fireplaces, as well as valuable porcelain ornaments on display. Melrose House offers a clay tennis court, a reference library, and a tea garden. Guided tours are available by appointment.
