House Rules

Parking

The driveway is shared with the tenants of the house attached to Bird Rock Cottage. They will never block your access, as they have their own parking spot, just off the driveway near the gate. If you could please park as closely as possible to the garage door, you will allow them enough space to manoeuvre in and out of that spot.

Baboons

When you’re upstairs or away, please keep the front door and patio doors closed to prevent unwelcome visitors from raiding your food supplies. It’s OK to leave the windows open; they are fitted with baboon bars.

Wifi

You’ll have unlimited high-speed (50 Mbps download; 25 upload) fibre wifi. The password will be provided.

Cooking

The kitchen is well equipped but has no conventional oven. You are welcome to bring an air fryer. Cooking is generally done on the induction cooktop and in the microwave. A gas burner is provided for use during loadshedding, which, thankfully, is rare these days. (Rechargeable lights are also provided.)

Rubbish

If you are staying for longer than five nights, please note that the municipal refuse truck collects rubbish from wheelie bins on Monday mornings. Please put your black bag in the wheelie bin near the sliding gate before 07:00 on Monday. Use the baboon-deterring clip to unlock and lock the wheelie bin. If you miss the collection, there’s a drop-off station at the OK Supermarket on 7th Street. If you’re on a shorter stay, just leave the rubbish bag in the bin in the kitchen.

Fresh towels and bedding

If you are staying for more than five nights, we’ll arrange with you to bring you a clean set of towels and bedding once a week, if you would like this.
Please bring your own beach towels.

Outdoor living

The patio garden is a lush sanctuary for relaxation. A hammock, usually kept in the garage, can be hung on hooks between the one pillar and the large tree. The hook in the tree might be hidden by leaves.

Green outdoor cushions are kept in the lower kitchen shelves. Please bring them in when you see signs of rain.

The portable braai (barbecue) usually lives in the garage. It can be wheeled out through the back door of the garage onto the patio. Please position it so that the heat won’t scorch the trees.

Laundry

A washing machine is available in the garage. Please turn on the water supply at the tap in the wall next to the machine and use your choice of detergent liquid or powder. Please turn off the water supply at the wall once your washing is done.

In sunny weather, you can use the washing lines against the back wall of the cottage.

Reading

You’ll find a diverse selection of books for all ages and most tastes, in the shelf downstairs and on the coffee table upstairs.


No television

If you’d like on-screen entertainment, please bring along your own device and take advantage of the high-speed wifi for streaming.


Keep cool

Standard fans are kept upstairs in the wardrobe (closet).


Fire

Please don't leave your braai fire unattended. Before retiring to bed, please make sure your fire is extinguished. In case of a fire emergency, there is a fire extinguisher in the upstairs room, on the floor at the door.


Smoking and vaping

Please smoke or vape outdoors only, and use the ashtray provided.


Quiet hours

Please consider the neighbours and turn down the volume between 21:00 and 07:00.


Visitors

Also in consideration of the neighbours and the services infrastructure, we ask you not to host parties, events or more guests than the number of people you’ve booked for.


Pets

While we are animal lovers, we unfortunately cannot accommodate any guests’ pets in or at the cottage. Please don’t encourage the neighbours’ cats to come inside; the next guest might be allergic to cat hairs that even deep-cleaning won’t remove.
