Nestled in an exclusive kloof on the edge of a Boekenhout forest in the peaceful village of Betty’s Bay, this heritage thatch-roof cottage stands as one of the few original homes built in the area. Designed and constructed in the 1930s by architect Tappies de Wet for his family, shortly after Harold Porter planned the town and its botanical gardens, the cottage has since been lovingly maintained and modernised by only its third set of owners.
The house can accommodate a total of 6 guests and comprises 3 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The main bedroom is furnished with a queen-size bed and has an en-suite with a bath and shower. The second bedroom has a queen-size bed and an en-suite with a shower. The third bedroom has 2 single beds and an en-suite shower.
The modern extension offers a generous open-plan living and kitchen area on the ground floor, where fold-away doors on two sides create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge-freezer, gas stove, oven, microwave, cutlery, crockery, and tea- and coffee-making facilities, and features a dishwasher. It extends to the lounge furnished with comfy seating and a cosy fireplace.
Outside, the deck has a lovely outdoor dining space, and guests can enjoy a lovely braai. The property is surrounded by mountains and nature, and guests can take it all in. The expansive grounds border the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, providing tranquil forest trails and picnic spots beneath the Boekenhout trees. The beach is just a short walk along the Dawids Kraal River.
Set within the Kogelberg Biosphere, regarded as the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, Betty’s Bay is part of one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Home to over 1,880 plant species, 77 of which are found nowhere else, the area also boasts an extraordinary marine environment and a nearby colony of African penguins, making it an exceptional destination for nature lovers.
