"Sutherland is an underrated gem. The combination of fossils, SALT, stargazing tours, the beautiful landscape and an inactive volcano make it ideal as a destination for families with small children, provided they can stay up late enough for the stargazing tours. Don't make the mistake of going when the moon is full as this limits the stargazing available and rather go when the sky is dark. Stay at a self-catering place and make sure to take food as the local restaurants are not very good and even the OK in town is poorly stocked."
